Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide
Oldcastle paver driveways in Sacramento typically run $7,000 to $18,000 installed, depending on square footage, base prep, and the specific Oldcastle product line you’re matching. We stock Oldcastle-compatible pavers and edge restraints, and we can usually source exact-match pieces within a few business days if your existing pattern is discontinued. Most Sacramento homeowners discover a problem the hard way – a paver shifts under a car tire, a joint opens up after a wet winter, or the sand washes out into the gutter after a heavy storm and suddenly the whole field looks uneven.
We’re Bradford Remodeling Co Sacramento, a Garrison Partners company, and we’ve been running disciplined hardscape crews in this market long enough to know that Sacramento’s clay soil and dry summers create a specific set of paver failures. Curtis Lane owns this outfit, and he’ll tell you the same thing he tells every client: if the base was done wrong, the pavers on top don’t matter. We fix the base first, then the pattern.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle manufactures a broad range of concrete pavers under brands you’ve probably seen at local supply yards: Belgard is the big one, but you’ll also see Oldcastle’s own line of interlocking concrete pavers, permeable pavers, and slab pavers in 4×8, 8×8, and 6×9 dimensions. The compatibility gotcha is thickness. Driveway pavers need to be 60mm thick minimum for vehicular traffic – anything 40mm will crack under a pickup truck, and we see that all the time in Sacramento driveways where someone bought the cheaper patio paver thinking it’d hold up.
To identify your existing paver, flip one over and look for the mold stamp. Oldcastle products typically show a four-digit plant code and a date stamp. Take a picture of it before you call us – it saves a trip. For discontinued patterns, we match color and dimension as closely as available stock allows, and we’ll tell you straight if a true match isn’t possible. We also work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on interior jobs, but for pavers, the Oldcastle line is what most Sacramento driveways were built with.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Paver rocking or tipping underfoot. The sand bed has eroded or the base shifted. This usually starts near the edges where water runs off. In Sacramento’s clay-heavy soils, poor drainage under the base is the root cause nine times out of ten.
- Wide, washed-out joints. Polymeric sand that wasn’t installed correctly or has been blasted out by a pressure washer leaves gaps. Once water gets into the base, the freeze-thaw cycle we get on cold winter mornings starts heaving pavers.
- Sunken depression in the middle of the field. A low spot that holds water after rain means the aggregate base was under-compacted or too thin. Sacramento sees enough rain in January and February to expose this problem quickly.
- Edge pavers separating from the curb or border. The edge restraint has failed or was never installed. Without a solid edge, the entire field starts drifting outward under traffic load.
- Cracked or spalled paver surfaces. If the paver face is flaking or pitting, it’s usually a lower-density concrete mix or water absorption over time. Sacramento’s summer UV doesn’t help – pavers that sit in full sun and soak up heat will crack if the base doesn’t flex evenly.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A paver driveway installation in Sacramento runs $7,000 to $18,000. That range covers removal of the old surface, base excavation to proper depth, placement and compaction of Class II road base, a bedding sand layer, the Oldcastle pavers themselves, edge restraints, and polymeric sand in the joints. What pushes you toward the top of that range is square footage, site access, slope or drainage corrections, and whether the existing base needs to be re-done rather than re-used.
Every project gets a written price before any work starts. That’s the Garrison Standard, and it’s non-negotiable. No numbers move at the door. If the paver work fails inside the first year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right at no charge. You get a signed written guarantee in your hand when the job closes, along with a clean site and a documented scope of what we did.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s real work a homeowner can do without help, and then there’s base repair, which is where most DIY paver projects go sideways in Sacramento. You can safely re-sand your joints with polymeric sand, pull and reset a single rocking paver, or inspect your edge restraints to see if they’re pulling away. Those are maintenance items. What you can’t do without the right equipment is compact a base correctly. A plate compactor from the rental yard will help, but if the underlying base has failed – which is what’s causing the pavers to move in the first place – resetting the top layer is a two-year band-aid, not a fix.
If you see a low spot that holds water, multiple pavers moving together, or edge drift over a run of more than a couple feet, the base needs to come up and be redone. That’s the job where we bring the skill and the heavier equipment. Call (279) 226-1509 if you’re not sure which situation you have – we’d rather walk you through a phone diagnosis than see you throw a weekend and a few hundred dollars at the wrong layer.
FAQs

A properly installed Oldcastle paver driveway lasts 25 to 40 years in Sacramento’s climate. The pavers themselves will outlast the sand joints and likely the edge restraints – those need attention every 5 to 8 years under normal use. Call (279) 226-1509 if you want us to check whether your driveway is aging normally.
A single cracked paver can be lifted and swapped if you have a matching replacement on hand. If the crack came from base movement, replacing the paver without addressing the base just moves the problem. We’ll tell you which it is after a quick site visit.
A typical Sacramento residential paver driveway takes 4 to 7 working days from demolition to final compaction, weather permitting. Add time if the base needs structural correction or drainage work. You’ll get a start date and a completion window in writing before the crew shows up.
We don’t carry full pallets of every Oldcastle pattern on the truck, but we maintain standing accounts with Sacramento-area supply yards and can pull exact-match or closest-match pavers within a few business days. If your pattern is discontinued, we’ll present the closest compatible Oldcastle option with a sample in hand before you commit.
