CWS Kitchen Remodeling: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

If your CWS kitchen is showing its age, the most common route is a full remodel built around your existing footprint, and in Sacramento that work typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed depending on cabinet count, countertop material, and how much plumbing or electrical needs to move. You don’t need to rip everything out to know something’s wrong. Most owners call us after living with a kitchen that leaks at the sink base, has cabinet doors that won’t stay square, or has a countertop seam that’s separated and catching crumbs. These are the calls we run in Sacramento every week, and they almost always start the same way: the owner wants to know if it’s a patch job or a full replacement, and what the honest number is.

We’re Bradford Remodeling Co Sacramento, an independent contractor. We are not affiliated with CWS, but we work with CWS-built kitchens regularly. Lead by Curtis Lane, our crews are background-checked and uniformed, and every job gets a written price before any work starts. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it applies to every CWS kitchen we touch.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS built a lot of kitchens in Sacramento’s tract-home neighborhoods from the late 1990s through the 2010s, and the cabinetry in those homes tends to follow a pattern. Most are frameless or semi-frameless boxes with 1/2-inch plywood or particleboard sides, 3/4-inch face frames, and hinges that were contractor-grade to begin with. If you can open a cabinet door and find a stamped label inside the drawer box or on the hinge plate, that tells us the cabinet line and the original hardware spec. If the label is gone, we measure the overlay and the bore pattern. That’s the compatibility gotcha: CWS kitchens often used a 35mm cup hinge with a 1/2-inch overlay, which is standard now, but some of the early builds used a 3/8-inch overlay that only matches a handful of aftermarket hinge plates. Guessing wrong means doors that bind or won’t close. We check before we order.

The OEM-versus-aftermarket decision for CWS parts comes down to what’s still available at the supply house. CWS didn’t manufacture its own cabinetry; it installed boxes from regional suppliers, and many of those lines are discontinued. When OEM drawer glides or hinge plates are gone, we use aftermarket equivalents from Blum, Grass, or Salice. Those are trade-grade parts that meet or exceed the original spec, and we’ll tell you which one we’re using and why. We also carry KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone lines for kitchens where full replacement makes more sense than patching a failing box.

Signs Your CWS Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Water staining or swelling at the sink base. The original seal between the countertop and the sink flange fails after years of exposure to Sacramento’s dry summers and wet winters, and the particleboard substrate underneath sucks up water like a sponge. Once it swells, the cabinet side can’t be salvaged.
  • Cabinet doors that won’t stay aligned. Contractor-grade hinges wear at the pivot points, and once the nylon bushing inside the cup is gone, the door sags a quarter inch or more. Adjusting the screw only buys you a few months. The underlying cause is hinge fatigue, not the door itself.
  • Drawers that stick or drop when opened. The original roller glides on CWS builds were light-duty, and after a decade or two of daily use the nylon wheels oval out. That’s why the drawer feels like it’s grinding. Replacement with ball-bearing glides fixes it permanently.
  • Countertop seams that have opened up. Sacramento’s temperature swings expand and contract the laminate and solid-surface tops, and seams that were tight at install can open an eighth of an inch over time. Moisture gets in, and the substrate starts to de-laminate underneath.
  • A tile backsplash pulling away from the wall. This usually means the original mastic behind the tile has dried out and lost its bond, or the drywall behind it took on water. Left alone, tiles start dropping into the counter. It is a substrate failure, not a tile failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

For a CWS kitchen remodel in Sacramento, you’re looking at $14,000 to $45,000 installed. A smaller galley kitchen with stock cabinets and a laminate or quartz top runs closer to the bottom of that range. A larger kitchen with an island, custom cabinet pulls, stone countertops, and plumbing relocations runs toward the top. What drives the number is cabinet count, countertop square footage, and how much rough-in work the existing plumbing and electrical need. Every Bradford Remodeling estimate is a written line-item scope, so you see the material cost and the labor broken out before you approve anything.

The price is the price. No change orders unless you change the scope yourself. And every completed CWS kitchen remodel carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work doesn’t hold within the first year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s in writing, and you get a signed copy before we leave the site.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can safely check on a CWS kitchen. Close every door and drawer and note which ones bind, sag, or don’t latch. Look under the sink with a flashlight and photograph any swelling, staining, or water marks. Run your hand along the countertop seams and note any gaps. Do not pull cabinet boxes apart, do not try to re-laminate a countertop, and do not attempt to re-plumb a sink base yourself. We’ve seen homeowners turn a $2,000 cabinet repair into a $12,000 wall and flooring job by opening up a wall they shouldn’t have. Kitchen remodel work runs on tolerances measured in sixteenths of an inch, and if the substrate is compromised, the fix is not a caulk line.

If you want a trained eye on it, call Curtis Lane and the Bradford Remodeling crew at (279) 226-1509. We’ll come out, assess the CWS kitchen, and hand you a written scope with a firm number. No obligation, no pressure. Straight scope, firm price, no surprises after the drywall goes up.
